Detective Selena Gomez?!

Based on Good Morning America’s segment: “GMA Cover Story”

We have seen Selena Gomez play characters as an actress, ranging from Alex Russo from “Wizards of Waverly Place”, to Mavis on the “Hotel Transylvania” movies. She also has done amazing hit songs like “Wolves”, “It Ain’t Me”, and “Love You Like a Love Song” just to name a few. But can you imagine Gomez playing a role in a cold-case mystery? Gomez and her mother were at a True Crime Conference called Crime-Con in Chicago, trying to figure out a 40-year old mystery. Believe it or not, Gomez’s passion is actually solving crimes. She posted on Instagram (to her 169 million followers), that she went to CrimeCon in a Crowd Solve convention. The mystery: how did 17-year-old Kurt Sova get killed in 1981, and who was responsible for the murder. Gomez paid attention to what police officers and polygraphic examiners mentioned during the convention. 300 true crime fans participated in the event, in which they turned over the evidence to investigators. The host of “Die-Alouge: A True Crime Conversation Podcast”, Rebekah Sebastian, mentioned that they respected the privacy of Gomez, and proved that even years later after the tragedy, they can make a difference, inputting an unsolved mystery to rest. True crime has trended over the years, which included the rise of Discovery Networks’ true-crime channel: ID (which stands for Investigation Discovery). Gomez wasn’t the only celebrity taking interest in that specific genre. Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, and Gwenyth Paltrow have explained their love in true crime shows. Even Kim Kardashian West, the reality-TV star fought for justice for Rodney Reed, who was wrongfully convicted of murdering Stacey Stites. Her fight for justice inspired her to be an attorney (which you can read about it here.) Organizers of CrimeCon were aware that Gomez was attending the event, they took precautions to make sure she has an exposer to the experience. The Sova family praised that the media for the additional publicity, thanks to Gomez’s attendance.

It is incredible that several celebrities and true crime fans are coming together to help shine a light on the unsolved cold cases, and that there still ways to go before the cold cases are finally over. Well done to those attending Crime Con, and we hope that several more celebrities take interest in the unsolved crimes. Remember, if you see something criminal or suspicious, please speak up, and not be silent.

Newstime thanks Raven Dreams for the correction of Kurt’s last name, Sova, not Soba. We also thank Raven for providing the link to this cold case, which you can find here.
